Crystal Mountain is a hidden jewel in Thompsonville Northern Michigan offering a family retreat for all seasons. As first time visitors, we were impressed by the amount of activities the resort offers including golf, nature trails, alpine slides, skiing (in the winter), kayaking, yoga, movie nights, indoor and outdoor swimming. It’s like the ultimate camp for families!
On our first morning, we explored the 1.6 miles of hiking trails called the Michigan Legacy Art Park, located within the grounds of Crystal Mountain. The Art Park features over 40 sculptures, poetry stones, and an outdoor amphitheatre within the densely wooded 30-acre preserve. The artist in me swooned when I heard it existed and I can only imagine how beautiful it looks in the winter covered in snow.
In another corner of the grounds, we found the adrenaline pumping Alpine Slides. Ride to the top of the mountain on the chairlift and ride down the 1,700-foot-long curved tracks on a specially-designed sled like a speed demon. FUN!
Jordon and Gavin spent the next day golfing, while Mom and I enjoyed the indoor hot tub and pool. The indoor option was chosen for a quiet refuge from the very fun (but very loud) outdoor kids activity pool. The guys went through 8 holes while playing name golf “like a boss.”
On our last day, we drove a short 10 minute distance to the nearby town of Beaula to rent jet skis from the Crystal Lake Marina. Jordon and Gavin took out the two jet skis initially, but soon after returned to take Mum and I on a thrill ride across the pristine lake. We all fell of the jet skis at one point (well, two if I’m being honest) and Jordon and I braved jumping off at 25 miles per hour!
Halfway through our adventure on the lake, Gavin lost the jet ski lanyard and had to suffer driving back to the Marina holding up the engine lever on his own (ouch!). The young man in charge of the Marina was super cool about the lost key and couldn’t have been nicer to us throughout the afternoon. By the end of the day we were all wishing that we each owned a jet ski, along with a private cottage on the lake.
Of course I have to end with food… but it was simply outstanding at every restaurant we visited during our time at Crystal Mountain. We enjoyed breakfast buffets, subs, fish tacos, scotch eggs, prime rib buffet, and the most amazing banana foster I have ever tasted.
A big thumbs up all around to Crystal Mountain for a restful and fun-filled week with the family – we’re already planning our next visit!
