Would you believe we’re getting sick of the 5-star life? Well, perhaps it’s not the 5-star life… we’re just sick of living out of a suitcase. Fortunately, we will be heading out of the hotel on Friday and moving into a transitional (furnished) villa for the next two weeks. This doesn’t really solve the “living out of a suitcase” dilemma, but it does move us that much closer to our new 2-bedroom apartment.
But wait, aren’t we suppose to be moving into a 3-bedroom apartment? and haven’t you already seen pictures of our new place?
Well, after days of thinking about our apartment, its location, and the friendships that we are starting to create through the orientation process… I realized that I *did* want to be located with my cohorts in the other apartment complex. As you might remember, I had requested (before coming to Dubai) to be closer to campus to keep things simple, easy for commuting, and focused on work. As life would have it, some of these priorities have changed.
The “other” apartment is only a 15 minute drive to campus (which makes commuting very low-key) and car pooling is a regular practice here. The high-rise is also located in the heart of Downtown Dubai near the iconic Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, and Dubai Metro System (as opposed to the University which is located on the outskirts of town). More importantly, it would mean we are in the same building as almost all of the people from orientation. If you think about it, the entire point of having us all together in this hotel for the first 10 days was to create community, friendships, and a network of people to trust.
So I made a phone call to HR and crossed my fingers. And wouldn’t you know it… there seems to be an opening in the apartment because someone *just happens* to be moving out. Yay! So we’ve turned in our keys to the other apartment and (inshallah) we will be moving into our new home in two weeks. Most of our group moves in this Friday but there are about 3 other folks that will be waiting with us in the transitional villas.
What will I miss the most about the hotel you ask? The breakfast buffet we’ve been enjoying every morning of course!!
ps. The first photo on this page is Jordon’s breakfast (not mine). His plate was way more interesting, so I photographed his instead.
