March in Dubai has been filled with exhibitions, international artists, and art-fairs all coming together for the umbrella initiative “Art Week.” Faculty, students, and art lovers toured galleries, non-commercial spaces, and fair-grounds filled with regional and international art throughout the jam packed week. The annual Art Week positions the Gulf as a place of artistic production in numerous cultural centers including Art Dubai, Design Days Dubai, and Sikka.
As part of Art Week, I took my students on a field trip to “Design Days Dubai” held at a huge purpose-built venue at the foot of the world’s tallest tower (the Burj). Design Days Dubai proudly exhibited 22 of the worlds’ leading design galleries entirely dedicated to limited edition furniture/objects. It was a great opportunity for students (and myself) to meet and be inspired by designers from across the globe.
It was absolutely impossible to capture all the wonderful work, but I’ve included some of my favorites below.
I loved some of the creative lighting solutions found in many of the gallery booths
Chair, chairs, and more chairs…
This piece was the class favorite by far. When closed, this ball could roll in any and every direction, not breaking anything inside.
Design Days Dubai had some pretty cool typography to boot!
